Sustainable Neighborhoods

A fundamental component of Village Partners’ development approach is sustainability. We approach sustainability with an eye to the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic. We seek to build neighborhoods that are sustainable in these three dimensions by improving neighborhood environmental quality, creating an inclusive and engaging culture of sustainability, and developing productive, self-sufficient places that allow local businesses to thrive.

Our objective is to design and build communities that have reduced emissions, promote healthy living, and take a common-sense approach to sustainability. We develop neighborhoods that put people and the environment first: walkable, transit-oriented communities. Transit-oriented communities reduce driving (VMT) by 50-60%, reduce car ownership by 30%, reduce household energy usage by over 50%, and reduce household greenhouse gas emissions by 40%.

We design our communities according to the principles of Smart Growth, a development approach that is environmentally sensitive, economically viable, and community-oriented. This kind of development improves air quality, reduces neighborhood emissions, improves water quality, leads to brownfields redevelopment environmental remediation, and leads to the conservation of open space. Smart Growth creates and nourishes exceptional communities that have increased transportation and housing choices, greater opportunity, economic productivity, a flourishing natural environment, and a legacy to be proud of for decades to come.

We take a long-term view, and believe that it is essential to build neighborhoods that will be sustainable and resilient for generations to come.
